These monitoring wells were installed by DCCR during the investigation and design phase to provide information regarding subsurface conditions. Construction of the tunnel and near surface structures under Division A is now complete. Therefore, the well installed as part of this division is no longer needed and will be abandoned. The monitoring well will be abandoned by either removing the well casing or perforating the well casing in the screened interval and filling the well with a cement bentonite slurry, or by backfilling with medium, hydrated, bentonite pellets in accordance with the well regulations (1831.5). SOIL BORING
ECS will conduct a geoprobe soil sampling program at 10 boring locations. ECS will employ a private utility locator in order to avoid utilities, primarily electrical lines associated with lighting in the area. Eight soil borings will be 5-feet deep, and two soil borings will be 30-40 feet deep. ECS will then install four monitoring wells, two deep and two shallow. The two locations where the geoprobe drilled 30-40 feet will be where the conductor casings for the deep wells will be run. The two deep wells will be installed using either a truck-mounted auger drill rig and rotary techniques, if needed, to reach a depth of 60 feet. Two shallow monitoring wells (nominally 30-feet deep) will be installed using a trucked-mounted auger drill rig, using continuous flight, hollow stem augers to advance the boreholes. Each monitoring well will be constructed with 10 feet of pre-packed well screen placed at the base of the boring, with PVC riser extending to the surface. The deeper wells installed to 60 feet bgs must be completed with an outer isolation casing in accordance with DC well construction regulations. The wells will be completed as two-inch diameter PVC wells with 0.020-inch machine slot screen and PVC casing. For the construction of each monitoring well, filter sand will be placed in the annulus around the screened PVC and two feet above the top of the screen. A two-foot thick, low permeability seal constructed of hydrated bentonite chips will then be placed on top of the sand. The bentonite will be hydrated with potable water as it is poured into the annulus around the well, thereby ensuring that all bentonite is properly hydrated. Powdered bentonite slurry with a 60:40 mix ratio (bentonite powder to water) will then be placed using a tremie pipe from the top of the bentonite seal to the surface. Each well will be completed using a 5-inch diameter flush-mounted cover with a galvanized steel sleeve. Cement will be placed around and at the base of the cover to prevent surface water infiltration and ensure the structural stability of the cover is suitable to withstand vehicular traffic. $0.00

SOIL BORING
ECS will conduct a geoprobe soil sampling program at four boring locations. ECS will employ a private utility locator in order to avoid utilities, primarily electrical lines associated with lighting in the area. Two soil borings will be 5-feet deep, and two soil borings will be 30-40 feet deep. ECS will then install four monitoring wells, two deep and two shallow. The two locations where the geoprobe drilled 30-40 feet will be where the conductor casings for the deep wells will be run. The two deep wells will be installed using either a truck-mounted auger drill rig and/or air rotary techniques to reach a depth of 60 feet. Two shallow monitoring wells (nominally 30-feet deep) will be installed using a trucked-mounted auger drill rig, using continuous flight, hollow stem augers to advance the boreholes. Each monitoring well will be constructed with 10 feet of pre-packed well screen placed at the base of the boring, with PVC riser extending to the surface. The deeper wells installed to 60 feet bgs must be completed with an outer isolation casing in accordance with DC well construction regulations. The wells will be completed as two-inch diameter PVC wells with 0.020-inch machine slot screen and PVC casing. For the construction of each monitoring well, filter sand will be placed in the annulus around the screened PVC and two feet above the top of the screen. A two-foot thick, low permeability seal constructed of hydrated bentonite chips will then be placed on top of the sand. The bentonite will be hydrated with potable water as it is poured into the annulus around the well, thereby ensuring that all bentonite is properly hydrated. Powdered bentonite slurry with a 60:40 mix ratio (bentonite powder to water) will then be placed using a tremie pipe from the top of the bentonite seal to the surface. Each well will be completed using a 5-inch diameter flush-mounted cover with a galvanized steel sleeve. Cement will be placed around and at the base of the cover to prevent surface water infiltration and ensure the structural stability of the cover is suitable to withstand vehicular traffic. $0.00
