Nationals Ballpark Ceremonial Groundbreaking, May 4 2006
(For more photos of what the area looked like before construction, see my Nationals Park Demolished Buildings Gallery
or my Stadium Construction page.)
With demolition at Half and O Streets SE already underway, the groundbreaking site was a bit messy.
The shovels used for the groundbreaking. Note that they are made from baseball bats.
A sign on the southwest corner of the Half and O intersection. (This is not where I saw home plate marked as being on a
Clark/Hunt/Smoot exhibit at an ANC meeting, it was actually right next to the red building. But if they fudged it, who will really know?)
Red Nats caps were handed out at the entrances, so the audience was a sea of red.

The stage at the groundbreaking, chock full of DC political royalty. The front row, from left: CFO Natwar Gandhi, DC Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, Ward 6 Councilwoman Sharon Ambrose, Deputy Council Chair Jack Evans, Council Chair Linda Cropp, Nationals owner Ted Lerner, Mayor Anthony Williams, some guy from Clark/Hunt/Smoot (sorry!), and DC Sports and Entertainment Commission's chairman Mark Tuohey at the lectern.
A group photo of the people who were most critical in the return of baseball to DC--from left, Mark Tuohey, Linda Cropp, Jack Evans,
Ted Lerner, Bill Hall of the DC Sports and Entertainment Commission, and Mayor Williams.
